List of the Components, Features and Functions used in FormReturn

  • Add Page button is at the bottom right of the Form Editor application window and is used to add more pages to a Form template if needed.
  • Aggregation Rule - set up in Mark Area properties assigns a score to any given checkbox; Eg: a score if the checkbox for the correct answer is marked.
  • Anonymous form templates - usually used in surveys when the respondents are to remain unidentified.
  • Application Window The graphical user interface of any component of FormReturn where the software's functions are performed.
  • Application Toolbar is the main toolbar in FormReturn and contains the graphic icons used to access and use the working components of FormReturn.
  • Assistance Button - Click the assistance button if you need questions answered about Formreturn or you would like to be contacted by a reseller.
  • Barcodesare used for identifying segments and forms during data capture, namely Form ID Barcode or Segment Barcodes.
  • Barcode Area - Added to the segment for affixing a Barcode label, is a method of form identification and captured data reconciliation.
  • Barcode Element Panel - Available when a barcode is selected, controls width, height and position of a barcode on the page.
  • Barcode Panel Available when the barcode is selected, controls the type of barcode used when the Barcode Area is selected.
  • Box Height  Checkbox height - in Mark area properties dialog, defines the height of each checkbox in the checkbox area. Using the standard checkbox settings is always advisable for the best possible detection.
  • Box weight  Checkbox weight - in Mark Area properties dialog, defines the thickness of the border of the checkboxes. Using the standard checkbox settings is always advisable for the best possible detection.
  • Box Width Checkbox width - in Mark Area properties defines the width of each checkbox in checkbox area. Using the standard checkbox settings is always advisable for the best possible detection.
  • Box roundness Checkbox shape - in Mark Area properties dialog, is used to alter the shape of the checkboxes eg: the smaller the setting number the more square the box will be. Using the standard checkbox settings is always advisable for the best possible detection.
  • Captured Data is the hand marked response data which has been captured using Optical Mark Recognition from scanned form images and is stored in FormReturn's Captured Data component.
  • Captured Data Fieldname The name given to each Mark Area (such as a question number) to identify it for pairing with the Captured value, when they are stored in Captured Data.
  • Captured Value  - the mark value of the checkbox (A;B etc.) that contained the response, stored in Captured Data.
  • Checkbox Tool - for adding a mark area with checkboxes to a segment.
  • Circle tool located in the Segment Editor and Form Editor Toolbars is used to draw circular shapes.
  • Components -the working components of FormReturn software streamline form design with captured data.
  • CSV file (Comma-Separated-Value) is used when exporting captured data to a spreadsheet. A common file type used to import data from one software application to another, using commas to separate the values.
  • Data - is a collection of typed or processed facts, figures or words such as Captured Data.
  • Data Export Preferences - choose and save your preferred data and column ordering that you would most often use.
  • Data Records are the single records in a Source Data Table located in source data.
  • Deskew is the process of removing skew (imperfections) from scanned images that can occur because of the camera being misaligned, imperfections in the scanning surface, or simply because the paper was not placed completely flat when scanned.
  • Detect Barcodes in the Preview Check panel, is selected when performing a Recognition Preview or test preview, to test if marks in Barcodes are detected on the segment and / or form template.
  • Detect Segments in the Preview Check panel, is selected when performing a Recognition Preview or test preview, to test if marks in Segments are detected on the segment and / or form template.
  • Detect Fragments in the Preview Check panel, is selected when performing a Recognition Preview or test preview, to test if marks in Fragments / Mark Areas are detected on the segment and / or form template.
  • Detect Marks  in the Preview Check panel, is selected when performing a test preview, to test if marks in Checkboxes are detected on the segment and / or form template.
  • Dialog box Eg. Create a New Form dialog, is a small temporary window in a graphical user interface that appears in order to request information from the user.
  • Duplicate - a feature of FormReturn that allows duplication of an original element added to the segment into multiple identical elements.
  • Element - Any component added to the form or segment templates, is added as a separate element.
  • Empty Segment Area is added to a Form template as an empty area where a segment can be loaded.
  • Error Count -
  • Extension is the second part of a filename. Eg: a saved segment file will automatically have .frs as the extension and a saved form file will automatically have .frf as the extension.
  • Fieldname The name given to the heading for a list of records in a data table. Eg: firstname; lastname etc.
  • Font Directory - FormReturn uses the fonts already installed on your computer's directory.
  • Font Size depicts the font size of the Mark value in checkboxes.
  • Font Brightness depicts the font brightness of the mark value in checkboxes.
  • A Form Template  template is designed in the Form Editor and can contain one or more pages which can be published and printed into individual forms.
  • Form Components are the elements added to a form template designed in FormReturn such as barcodes and checkbox mark areas.
  • Form Editor is the application used to design and edit forms.
  • Form Editor Toolbar is located above the Form Editor application window.
  • Form ID Barcode - added to a form template in the form editor, is the barcode on each page of a form which identifies and links form pages to the template they belong to.
  • Form Identification - a method of identifying the form and to reconcile the response data from the form to a data table record.
  • Form Pages Tab in the Captured Data application shows each page of the selected form, the scanned Image of the form and the Captured Data results taken from the Form page.
  • Form Password is the Form ID Barcode value automatically generated and used by FormReturn to identify a Publication.
  • Form Score - In  Captured Data,  is the total score for a form published with an aggregation rule applied.
  • Form Template - Designed using FormReturn's form and segment editors, can contain one or more pages.
  • Forms Panel for managing Captured Data.
  • Forms Tab is located in the Captured Data Tab bar and shows a list of forms published from the selected Publication.
  • Fragment Another name for a mark area added to the segment used for capturing response data.
  • Fragment Padding is the white area between the checkboxes and the edges of the fragment.
  • Graphical user Interface - Eg. the Form Editor Application window is the type of application window used in FormReturn, based on graphics ( picture icons and menus) instead of text. It uses a mouse and keyboard arrows as  navigation devices.
  • Horizontal Space located in Mark Area Properties is used for spacing between each checkbox in the mark area. Using the default checkbox settings is always advisable.
  • Icon is a graphic symbol indicating a tool or function in FormReturn's toolbars.
  • Image icon located in the Form Editor and Segment Editor Toolbars is used when you want to add an area for loading an image into.
  • Image Area Panel located in the Form Editor and Segment editor, is used to load an image into the selected Image Area.
  • Information button is a small blue button containing a question mark. When you see one of these buttons, you can click on it to go to the help guide for more information.
  • Key Field - is either an ID grid or a Barcode Area added to the segment for the purpose of form identification and / or the reconciliation of captured data with a record in the data table.
  • Language Preferences Select your language in FormReturn's Server, Database settings.
  • Load Segments button is used in Form Editor, to load a Segment onto an empty segment area in the Form template.
  • Luminance is one of the recognition settings of FormReturn used for increasing the darkness of color scanned images.
  • Marks is the term used for handmarked responses in checkboxes.
  • Mark Area panel contains the set properties button used for opening the Mark Area Properties dialog.
  • Mark area is the area on a Segment containing a bank of Checkboxes used for capturing response marks.
  • Mark Area Properties dialog box is used to set up a Mark Area or Key Field for appearance and reconciliation of captured data.
  • Mark Threshold is a recognition setting of FormReturn, used for setting the threshold  between the black pixel count and the white pixel count of the checkboxes on a scanned image.
  • Mark Value - the value of a checkbox such as A;B;C etc.
  • Navigation Tools - the main tools for getting around FormReturn software are the mouse, the arrow keys on the keyboard and Navigation Shortcuts using the keyboard.
  • New Form icon located in the Application Toolbar is used to create a new form in the form editor.
  • New Segment icon in the Application Toolbar is used to create a new segment in the segment editor.
  • Optical Mark Recognition or OMR is the computer software process that FormReturn uses to Capture the response Data from scanned images of returned forms.
  • OMR ID Grid - A method of form identification which uses a grid added to the segment for capturing ID numbers from respondents.
  • Order Index - Choose the order of your columns of captured data when it is exported to a spreadsheet. Data Table Fieldnames; Captured Data Fieldnames and Score Fieldnames; Delimited File Export Options
  • Page Properties Panel located in the Form Editor application, controls the form page size and orientation.
  • Panel is a rectangular box which contains buttons or parameters for performing certain functions in an application.
  • Parameters is a quantity that defines certain characteristics of systems or functions.
  • Preferences - Set your preferences for Form design, publishing and processing.
  • Preview Check Panel located in the Recognition Preview application is used for testing that barcodes, segments, fragments and marks are detected in the print and test previews.
  • Preview Form Image button located in Form Pages panel in Captured Data.
  • Processing Queue - the component of FormReturn where scanned form images are uploaded and wait in queue to be processed by the Form Processor in FormReturn's server.
  • Properties - in computer software are the configurable parameters of a component for example: width and height of a checkbox.
  • Publication Panel in the Publish Form application of the form editor is used to print or export a publication.
  • Publication the form template is published which stores it's information in FormReturn so the captured response data can be reconciled back to the template and the source data table.
  • Publication Name is a name you give to the publication of the form template.
  • Publications in Captured Data, shows a list Publications stored in FormReturn. You shouldn't delete a publication from Captured Data before all the forms from the publication have been processed and you have exported the data.
  • Publish Form tab is located in Form Editor Tab bar.
  • Page Score the total score for a form page in Captured Data.
  • Recognition Preview tests if the segment or form has been designed properly for detection of the barcodes, segments, fragments and mark areas.
  • Recognition Settings are what FormReturn's form processor uses to detect which checkboxes contain dark marks.
  • Rectangle tool is in Segment Editor Toolbar and the Form Editor Toolbar for drawing rectangular shapes.
  • Refresh button in the Source Data, Processing Queue and Captured Data applications, updates any recently added or processed data.
  • Reprocess Unidentified Images  -  for manually processing unrecognized form images which have been put in the Unidentified Images table of the Processing queue.
  • Reprocess Errors in Response data For manually processing captured response data with errors.
  • Reset Publication Settings used for re-setting the recognition settings after the template has been published or for downloading published template files from FormReturn's database.
  • Response Data is the data captured from the chosen responses of the respondents of the forms, who shade in the checkbox of their choice with a dark pen or pencil.
  • Round Rectangle tool is in Segment Editor toolbar or Form Editor toolbar for drawing oblong shapes.
  • Rows and Columns in the Mark Area properties dialog, depicts the number of vertical and horizontal checkboxes in the mark area.
  • Scan Button - automatically starts FormReturn scanning and uploading form images.
  • Scanning Forms - OMR recognizes scanned images for processing hand-marks from checkboxes.
  • Segment - Created in the segment editor, contains the mark areas which will be used for capturing handwritten responses.
  • Segment Area is an empty or blank area, added to a form template for loading a segment into.
  • Segment Barcodes are the barcodes located at the top right and bottom left of a segment. They are used in data capture to locate the checkbox mark area areas.
  • Segment Panel is for controlling the segment size and the segment barcode size.
  • Segment Properties dialog box is used to set up checkbox mark areas for data capture.
  • Segment editor is the application used to create new segments.
  • Segment editor toolbar is located above the Segment Editor page application window.
  • Segment tool located in the Form Editor Toolbar is used to add an empty Segment area to a form template in the Form editor, into which a segment can be loaded.
  • Select tool located in the Segment Editor and Form Editor Toolbars is used to select an area of the page.
  • Server - FormReturn's server is used by the software for database storage and form processing.
  • Set Properties button - located in the Mark Area panel at the left of the Segment Editor page when a Mark area is selected.
  • Snap to Grid - an alignment tool that can be used in the Segment editor and the Form Editor.
  • Sort Captured Data >> See - Order Index
  • Source Data is the name given to FormReturn's database where data tables and respondent's records are stored, added or edited.
  • Source Data Tabs - located above the Source Data Application window.
  • Source Data Tables are added to source data for storing your data records.
  • Template Editors - are accessed with the New segment and New form icons and are used for creating or editing a form template.
  • Template Variable Replacement - A method of form identification, used for replacing typed fieldnames from your data table on the form template, with source data records.
  • Ternary Operation means this applies to everything else after the colon: it is used in Mark Aggregation where it refers to, all other answers after the colon get this score.
  • Text Area is an area added using the text tool to a Segment or Form where text can be typed.
  • Text Area Panel located at the left when a Text Area is selected, is used to control fonts and text colors.
  • A Toolbar is a bar which contains icons denoting the tools which perform the functions needed for the user interface page where the toolbar is located.
  • TWAIN - Used for automatic communication of FormReturn with your (Twain compatible) scanner.
  • Upload Image button located in the Unprocessed Panel in the Processing Queue application window, is used to manually upload scanned images of returned forms, from your computer into FormReturn.
  • Unidentified Images Table located in the Processing Queue stores form images which were unrecognized by the form processor.
  • Unprocessed Images tab  located in the Processing Queue application lists form images uploaded and waiting to be processed.
  • Verify Form Structure  verifies there is a Form ID Barcode are on every form page of the template you are publishing.
  • Vertical Space - is the spacing between rows of checkboxes which can be changed in the Mark Area Properties dialog. Using the default checkbox settings is always advisable.
  • Visible Checkbox Text  - Found in the Mark Area Properties Dialog is a box to select whether to show or hide the mark value in checkboxes.
